What is a Mata Ki Chowki?
A Mata Ki Chowki is a devotional gathering where family and friends sing bhajans in praise of Maa Durga, Maa Vaishno Devi and the nine forms of the Goddess. A small decorated altar, the chowki or darbar, holds the Mata’s image. A jyot (sacred flame) is lit, and a group of singers and musicians lead the bhajans. The evening ends with aarti, prasad and blessings for the household.
Most families hold a chowki to thank the Goddess for a blessing, or to ask for one before a new beginning: a new home, a child’s birth, a new business, recovery from illness, or Navratri.

The meaning behind Mata Ki Chowki and Mata Ka Jagran
In North Indian homes, especially across Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal, Jammu and Uttar Pradesh, the Mata Ki Chowki is one of the most loved ways to honour the Goddess. The word chowki refers to the small raised seat on which the Mata’s image is placed. The word jagran means staying awake: devotees keep the night alive with bhajans in Her honour until sunrise.
Families hold a chowki for three main reasons. The first is gratitude, thanking Mata Rani after a wish is fulfilled, which is often called fulfilling a mannat. The second is blessing a new beginning, such as a home, a child or a business. The third is togetherness: few events bring three generations into one room, singing together, the way a chowki does.
The core rituals are simple and the same everywhere. The jyot is lit and kept burning through the evening. The Goddess is invited with an aahvaan and offered a chunri. Bhajans and bhents are sung by the singers and the family. Bhog is offered, the aarti is performed, and prasad is shared with every guest. A good jagran party keeps these rituals at the centre and lets the music serve the devotion, not the other way round.
The worries every host has, and how we remove them
Planning a chowki should feel like devotion, not a project. These are the problems families tell us about most.

The team behind the bhakti
Amrit Jagran Party began in 2020 with a simple promise: every family deserves a chowki that feels as sacred as a temple and runs on time, every time. Six years on, our family has grown to 500+ lead singers, chorus singers, dholak and dhol players, keyboard and octapad artists, banjo and tabla players, sound and light engineers, decorators, jhanki artists, pandits and event coordinators.
Every artist who joins us is auditioned for traditional Mata bhajans and bhents, trained in darbar etiquette and ritual purity, and works under a senior team lead on their first events. That is how we keep the same standard on every one of our 5,000+ nights, in every city.

How much does a Mata Ki Chowki cost?
A home chowki with a small team costs less than an all-night jagran with a full orchestra and jhankis. Your exact price depends on six things.
| Factor | How it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Event type | A chowki (3–4 hrs) costs less than an all-night jagran |
| Team size | More singers and musicians means a higher cost |
| Lead singer | Well-known or recorded artists cost more |
| Jhankis & decor | Each extra jhanki and premium flower decor adds to the cost |
| Sound & stage | A home setup vs a line-array stage for 500+ guests |
| Date & city | Navratri, weekends and outstation travel cost more |
Tip to save money: book a weekday, choose a local team in your city, and add jhankis only where you have space and an audience. We will always show you a lower-cost option.

How to organise a Mata Ki Chowki at home: a 7-step guide
First time hosting? Follow these steps and your chowki will run smoothly, whether you book us or not.
1. Fix the date and timing (3–6 weeks before)
Choose a date that suits your family and, if you follow one, the muhurat your pandit suggests. Evenings from 7 pm work best for a chowki because working relatives can join and the jyot looks beautiful after sunset. For an all-night jagran, plan to start by 9 or 10 pm so the Tara Rani ki katha can begin after midnight. Navratri, Ashtami, Tuesdays and Fridays are popular, so lock your date early if you want one of these.
2. Decide chowki or jagran, and the guest count
Up to about 50 guests in a home or terrace usually means a 3–4 hour chowki. Above 150 guests, or if you are fulfilling a mannat, families often choose a full jagran in a hall, tent or ground. Your guest count decides the team size, sound system, seating and bhog quantity, so a rough number is the most useful thing to share with us.
3. Pick the venue and plan the space
The darbar faces the guests, with the artists seated beside it. Leave a clear path for the aarti and for elders to come forward for darshan. For a flat, a living room cleared of furniture is enough. For a terrace or lawn, check for wind (it can blow out the jyot) and arrange a covering in case of rain. Tell us the room size and we will plan the layout.
4. Book your jagran party and confirm in writing
Ask for an itemised quote listing every artist, instrument, jhanki and decor item. Confirm arrival time, start and end time, and who to contact on the day. With Amrit Jagran Party all of this comes in writing as standard.
5. Arrange puja samagri and bhog
Keep ghee, wicks, chunri, coconut, flowers, fruits and sweets ready, or ask us to bring the full samagri kit. Prepare bhog of halwa, chana and poori, or ask us to arrange it through our catering partners. Plan prasad packets so every guest leaves with blessings.
6. Invite guests and inform neighbours
Send invitations about 10 days ahead with the start time, venue and a location pin. A short note to neighbours about the timings keeps everyone happy, and a family WhatsApp group helps relatives coordinate travel.
7. On the day
Our team arrives 2 hours early to set up. You only need to receive guests, sit with your family and join in the bhajans. The evening ends with aarti, bhog and prasad, and we pack up and leave your space clean.
Live jhankis that bring the darbar to life
A jhanki is a live devotional tableau performed by trained artists in costume. Add one or several, depending on your space and the length of the evening.
Mata Vaishno Devi darbar
The most requested jhanki: the holy cave with the three pindis, recreated with lights and drapes.
Maa Durga on her lion
Ideal for Navratri and Ashtami chowkis, with the nine forms of the Goddess honoured in the bhajans.
Maa Kali
A powerful tableau usually presented late at night during an all-night jagran.
Shiv-Parvati
A favourite for Sawan, Mahashivratri and Monday jagrans, with Shiv bhajans and aarti.
Radha-Krishna
A joyful jhanki with Holi-style flower play that children and elders love.
Hanuman Ji
Added with Hanuman Chalisa or Sundarkand, especially on Tuesdays.
Ganesh Ji
Opens the evening with Ganesh vandana for an obstacle-free start.
Khatu Shyam Ji
For families who follow Shyam Baba, with Shyam bhajans and nishan.
Our singers lead traditional Mata bhents, Punjabi devotional songs, Hindi bhajans, the Jai Ambe Gauri aarti, Hanuman Chalisa, Sai bhajans and Shyam bhajans. Send us your family’s favourite bhajans a week before the event and we will include them, with lyrics sheets for guests who want to sing along.
Planning a Navratri chowki or jagran?
Navratri is our busiest season, twice a year in Chaitra (March–April) and Sharad (September–October). Families book single-day chowkis on Ashtami or Navami, all-nine-day packages with a short evening chowki each day, or an all-night jagran to close the festival. Societies and temples book bhajan sandhyas for the whole community.
Weekend and Ashtami slots fill 6–8 weeks ahead. Book early to get your preferred lead singer and jhankis. We also offer kanya pujan arrangements and Navratri decor in the colours of each day.
Living abroad? Book a jagran for your family in India
Many of our bookings come from families in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and the Gulf who want a chowki or jagran for parents back home. Message us on WhatsApp from anywhere, approve your written quote, and pay online. Our coordinator works with your family on the ground, and you watch the whole evening live on a private stream.
Before you book, ask us on WhatsApp for videos of recent jagrans, and the singers and jhankis we would send. You see exactly what you are paying for.
Six tips from 5,000+ chowkis
Small touches our coordinators suggest to every family. They cost little and make the evening unforgettable.
Share a family bhajan list
Send 5–10 bhajans your family loves. Hearing a song an elder used to sing makes the night personal.
Invite the family to sing
Our lead singer invites family members to sing a bhent. Tell us who would like to, and we will key the music to their voice.
Plan seating for elders
Keep chairs near the darbar for elders and space on durries for others, so everyone has a clear view of the jyot.
Light the space warmly
Warm lights and diyas photograph beautifully and feel more devotional than harsh white lights.
Live stream for relatives
Relatives abroad or unwell can join on a private YouTube link. It is one of our most appreciated add-ons.
Pack prasad in advance
Ready prasad boxes at the exit mean guests leave quickly and happily after the aarti.
The elements of a complete chowki
Every Amrit Jagran Party booking can include each of these, arranged by our own team.
Mata Vaishno Devi jhanki
Cave jhanki with the three holy pindis
Marigold darbar decor
Fresh genda strings framing the darbar

Brass bells hung above the singhasan
